Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: Which Is Right For You?
October 26, 2022
By now, almost everyone’s heard about lip fillers. Thank Kylie Jenner for making super-full lips a trend that's here to stay. But did you know that there’s a different option for creating the appearance of fuller lips? It’s called a lip flip, and we’re obsessed. Which one is right for you? We’re here to answer all your lip treatment questions!
What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers is a general term that refers to many different products, all of which are made out of hyaluronic acid. HA is a substance your body naturally produces that gives your skin a plump, firm appearance. When injected into the lips, fillers create more volume and can be used to correct uneven or thin lips. Common brands for fillers include Restylane and Juvederm. Each brand has several fillers available in different textures depending on the result you're looking for. We wrote an in-depth guide about fillers if you want to learn even more.
What is a lip flip?
A Botox lip flip places just a few units of Botox to temporarily paralyze a small, isolated part of your upper lip muscle, the orbicularis oris muscle. This “flips” the upper lip out or relaxes it and makes more of it visible. The results are subtle but still make an impact. For more info about Botox and how it works, you can read our guide to Botox here.
What are the pros and cons of lip fillers?
Pros:
- Instant results!
- Longer lasting (6 months to 1 year on average)
- Results are more dramatic and noticeable
- Filler can be applied strategically to re-shape the lips
- Filler can be used on both upper and lower lips
- Filler can be dissolved if you don’t like the results
Cons:
- More expensive than lip flips
- Lips will be swollen and possibly bruised for the first 5 days or so post treatment
What are the pros and cons of lip flips?
Pros:
- More subtle than filler in many cases
- Also fixes a gummy smile
- Typically much less expensive than filler if doing a small area like the lip flip
- Keeps the upper lip from looking thinner/showing your gums whenever you smile
Cons:
- Results take 5-7 days to show up
- Only works on the upper lip
- Drinking with a straw can be hard especially while the Botox settles
- Results are not as dramatic as fillers
- Botox wears off more quickly than fillers, so you will have to repeat the treatment more frequently (Every 3-4 months) to maintain results
- Can’t be reversed like filler–if you don’t like the results, you have to wait for the Botox to wear off
Can you combine a lip flip with lip filler?
Yes, you can combine them, and many people do! Especially if your top lip is much thinner than your lower lip, both treatments can help correct the imbalance. Often even with a lip flip, a little bit of filler can be used to further enhance your lips without going overboard. Your treatment provider can do both treatments in the same session, which saves you time.
Where should I get a lip flip or lip fillers?
You should get these treatments from a qualified, licensed treatment provider who you know you can trust.
