How To Be Barbiecore
July 21, 2023
It’s Barbie’s world and we’re all just living in it. With the release of the new Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, there’s one aesthetic that’s everywhere this summer: Barbiecore. Seen on celebs from Lizzo to Hailey Bieber, this hyper-feminine style is also taking over TikTok. Looking to take part in the summer’s hottest fashion and beauty trend? Here are the key pieces you need to step into Barbieland.
Think pink
Most obvious of all, pink is Barbie’s color. But don’t feel like you need to stick to bright, hot pink to join the trend. Bubblegum, baby pink, peachy pink, or deeper fuschia are all part of this aesthetic. Choose a pink shade that looks good on your skin tone. The ultimate Barbiecore look is a monochromatic pink look from head to toe, but if you’re looking to just dip your toes in, opt for pink shoes or a pink bag.
Not into pink? Embrace other bold, bright hues
If pink just isn’t your thing, or you want more variety, bold and bright colors are also part of this aesthetic. Neutrals aren’t really Barbie’s favorite. Whether you opt for kelly green, creamsicle orange, or neon blue, bright colors will immediately boost your mood.
Bold, colorful eyeshadow
Colorful eyeshadow or eyeliner (paired with a slick of pink gloss, natch) is another Barbie signature. Pink, blue, and purple are all great choices. Shimmery textures are great, but you can do an all-matte version of the look too. Just keep in mind that matte eyeshadows are usually harder to blend. Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge did a tutorial recently showing how she did a Barbie look on Dua Lipa.
Shiny or plastic accessories
A winking homage to Barbie’s plastic status? Plastic, PVC, or shiny accessories. Pink patent leather shoes or a clear plastic bag are both fun ways to emulate Barbie. Other shiny or sparkly materials work too, in case you’ve been looking for an excuse to buy one of Prada’s crystal-studded Re-editions.
Matching sets
Barbie loves a coordinated look. Matching sets–from workout clothes to loungewear to going out looks–give you that touch of “perfection” that Barbie always has. Plus it makes getting dressed super easy, because you don’t have to think about it. Everything already matches!
Feminine, girly touches
If you’ve always wanted to embrace your inner girlie girl, then now’s the time. Ruffles, rosettes, bows, and lace are all Barbie signatures. Same with high heels and top-handle purses–the more feminine, the better.
Dress to a theme
Barbie can be anything she wants to be. Cowgirl? Doctor? Businesswoman? Check, check, check. That’s why theme-dressing is perfect for the Barbiecore aesthetic. So pair those cowgirl boots with a denim vest, or do milkmaid braids with your cottagecore dress. Fully commit to a theme and discover what Barbie has known all along–that it’s fun!
Barbie Botox
None of us are going to have Barbie's bust-waist-hips ratio, and that's a good thing because if we did, we'd fall over! But if you want Barbie's long neck and feminine shoulders, it's actually possible. Strategic Botox injections can help you get the look. Botox injections in the trapezius muscles have been nicknamed "Barbie Botox," but it can also help with posture and tension headaches. You can read all about it--and see the before and after pictures--in our blog explaining trap Botox.
